LJUBLJANA, Slovenia – Rog bikes (know as Elan bikes from 2003-2005) was not successful in the search for a strategic partner and fresh capital and had to stop operating. Bike Europe already wrote about the long saga, which has finally come to an end. April 14th Rog was sold for € 210.732,77.
In public auction there were only two prospective bidders for 'package 1' – the Rog brand name and logo, the stock of remaining Rog bikes, production line and materials. One bidder – Velo (distributor for Wheeler, Fuji, Haro …), didn’t want to make an offer because ex-employees claim to be owners of the Rog brand. Second bidder was big surprise to all – Gama was distributor for Shimano for all countries of former Yugoslavia until last year, when Eurotrade from Greece took over.
Gama sold their office building and all stock to newly established CS-Eurotrade and went out of the cycling bussines – until now! Gama has tried to launch their own brand of bikes several times, but never with much success. They even invested in a factory in Bosnia. Now they are back – Ivan Vogrinec, general manager of Gama, just made a brief statement that they want to keep Rog bikes in Slovenia. At least the office, R&D and an assembly line for top models. They also want to rehire some of the people that worked for Rog. Gama itself has 5 employees at this moment and will try to re-launch a company that had 1.400 employees at its peak in the late 80’s.
Factory buildings and land was sold at the time of Elan Bikes and is now in the process of renovation – some buildings will be destroyed, others will be used by other companies. There were several other packages on auction, but only No. 5 was sold. It contained Shimano components worth almost € 55.000. They were bought by Valy Zagar, one of bigger bike shops and will be used for their use and distribution to other shops around Slovenia.
This finally brings the Rog/Elan bikes story to a conclusion and gives hope that Rog will now have fresh start. (GS)
