PARIS, France – Bicycles and bike products are a growing category at Sport 2000 France. This international operating franchising organization is opening more dedicated bike stores in France under the Mondovélo format. 15 Mondovélo bike stores are now part of Sport 2000 France. Most of the other stores operating under the Sport 2000 flag also sell bikes and bike products.
Sport 2000 France reports a 3.2% sales increase at the retail level to € 598 million in 2008, in spite of a 0.5% decline in the French sporting goods market. Even on a same-store basis, its retail network outside the mountains enjoyed an increase of 2.7% partly because of the establishment of dedicated bike and mountaineering corners in Sport 2000 stores.
At the end of 2008 there were 15 Mondovélo bike stores and eight corners operating within the group, plus five Espace Montagne stores and 23 corners. In the mountains, Sport 2000 ended up with a network of 201 stores in almost all the French ski resorts, including 62 ski rental shops under the two-year-old Skiway banner.
The number of stores outside the mountains grew to 286, and an additional 14 doors have been added since the beginning of 2009, including 11 corporate stores directly owned by Sport 2000 France. Their number should reach 20 by the end of this year under the business plan worked out through its new institutional shareholder, Activa Capital, which acquired 37.4% of its shares in 2008. The plan also calls for 10 new Sport 2000 stores in the mountains, plus about 20 more Skiway shops.
