AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands – Electric bicycles are now the biggest money-maker for dealers in the Netherlands. In the first six months of 2010 e-Bikes turned into the number one sales segment money-wise. Overall sales of electric bikes stood at 37.6% of the total turnover at dealers in the Netherlands.
According to GfK Benelux (commissioned by industry association RAI and dealer association BOVAG) in the first six months of the year electric bicycles were the only category scoring an increase in sales. 1.3% more e-Bikes were sold compared to the same period in 2009. All other categories scored lower results. Total bike sales (including electric bicycles) stood at 725,000 units; 6.8% lower compared to the same period in 2009.
Electric bikes passed the city bike category; traditionally the by far bestselling category in Holland. Money-wise city bikes accounted for 36.3% of the total dealer turnover while 11.9% of the turnover was made with Hybrid/Trekking Bikes. Kid bikes accounted for 4.4% of the turnover while 10% were scored with the ‘other’ categories.
A more detailed look at the sales of electric bikes in the Netherlands during the first half of 2010 shows that in total 323 different models were on sale. They were supplied under 28 brand names. 88% of the total turnover in electric bikes was made with 178 e-Bike models (55% of the total number of models on sale).
GfK Benelux also listed the Top 5 best selling e-Bikes brands. Number one is Sparta while Batavus holds the runner-up position. Giant is the 3rd leading brand with Koga following on 4th position and Gazelle at 5th.
The GfK Benelux statistics were presented at a recently held e-Mobility Congress organized by Reed Business; the publishing company of Bike Europe and its sister magazine for Benelux bike dealers ‘Tweewieler’. Here GfK also noted that currently 88% of the population of the Netherlands owns a ‘regular’ bicycle. Only 7.7% of the population owns an e-Bike which leaves an enormous potential for future sales.
