SAN FRANCISCO, CA/USA--United News & Media, the UK parent company of Miller Freeman, announced that it plans to sell its US bike trade journal Bicycle Retailer & Industry News and the popular Interbike trade show, among others. The news, announced on 17 December, resurfaced a few days ago in the Bicycle Industry Newsletter by the Coffrin Group.
In the United News release, the company announced that it intends to establish Miller Freeman as the leading Internet business-to-business media company. As a result, it will sell some of Miller Freeman's non-core activities, such as its bicycle and outdoor magazines.
Bicycle Industry News editor Gary Coffrin sees the sale of Interbike in particular as a valuable opportunity for the US bike industry. "If USA dealer organizations and a supplier group could unite to buy the show," he says, "booth space charges could be reduced, there would be a new income source for industry promotion, and the CABDA and Interbike shows could be combined or could develop a more synergistic relationship."
He also adds that retailers and wholesaler could reap benefits as well. (JW)
