The attendance at this morning’s ETRA/LEVA seminar on the EU rules and regulations governing electric bicycles reflected what was on the Eurobike show floor. There e-Bikes were everywhere and so the seminar attracted lots of attention. But whether all the participants will be happy about what they heard is very doubtful.
Contrary to what is expected on such a new bike category; electric bicycles are strongly regulated. All that legislation was pointed out to the about 70 attendants by a series of speakers that each explained a section of these rules and regulations.
ETRA secretary general Annick Roetynck told everything there is to know on type-approval legislation and CEN standards. Tony Hoyland who is a CEN consultant, handled the Machinery and EMC Directives. The Battery Directive was explained by Alain Vassart from the Battery Recycling Association while John de Roche from Clean Mobile went deeper into the UN regulations on Battery Transport. Finally, David Bordeaux, sales manager at TÜV Sud explained all on the new TÜV Sud label for electric drive trains.
