AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands – Based on the GfK market survey on 2011 bicycle sales, the business in used e-bikes doubled from 26,000 units in 2010 to 50,000 last year. The number of new bikes (all categories) sold by IBDs fell by 5.8 percent compared to 2010.
The total value of the used e-bikes sold increased from 19.5 million euro in 2010 to 30.6 million euro last year. During the same period the total number of used Trekking bikes declined from 93,000 to 45,000 bikes. The average price per used Trekking bike rose from 174 euro in 2010 to 187 euro in 2011. For used e-bikes the average amount paid declined from 748.88 euro in 2010 to 612.95 euro in 2011.
Last year the total market volume for new bikes sold via the IBD channel was 810,000 units and 388,000 bicycles via other retailers like supermarkets and internet. In 2010 these figures amounted 860,000 for IBD sales and 354,000 for other retailers. For e-bikes sales the Dutch market statistics report 165,000 in 2010 and 181,000 in 2011.
The total value of the IBD business was 778 euro million in 2011 and 791 euro million in 2010. During the same period the mass merchant supermarket business increased from 93 million euro to 101 million euro in 2011.
