BRUSSELS, Belgium (17 February 2000)–On 16 February the European Union began talks with the second group of EU accession candidate countries. This marks the beginning of the second phase in which the EU expects to double its size in the next 10 years. The second group includes Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Latvia, Lithuania and Malta. In the next few years these countries will work to adapt their political, social and economic structures to meet EU member state norms.
At the same time, the EU continues discussions with the first group of candidate countries: Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Cyprus and Estonia. (JW)
