1 May 2000)–French car manufacturer Renault and Italian scooter producer Benelli SpA have signed a technical and commercial agreement to develop and commercialize an exclusive range of scooters for the global market under the Renault brand name. Renault, which signed the deal though its subsidiary Renault Sport, will build up a line of scooters that will include models ranging from 50cc to 250cc. The first be introduced to the market at the beginning of next year.
Benelli currently has a 6% share of the European scooter market (50cc-250cc), according to a recent release. The company underwent a complete relaunch in 1997 under the helm of the Merloni family. “Benelli is present in all the main European markets with a complete range of avant-garde models,” says Andrea Merloni, president of Benelli SpA. “In less than three years we’ve presented and produced three 50cc models and four over 50cc models.” For Renault, it is its second agreement with a two-wheeler supplier in a year’s time. Last year the company introduced new suspension technology developed together with Taiwanese bicycle major Giant. (JW)
