PARIS, France (6 July 2000)–France’s second largest sporting goods retail chain Go Sport has plans to set up a wholly-owned subsidiary Go Sport International to support its international expansion. In this light, the retailer recently announced that it will open up a store in Budapest, Hungary, in the spring of 2001. A total of three stores are planned for Hungary in the next 18 months. The move will be coordinated by Go Sport’s Polish operations. Go Sport increased its sales by 17.6% in the first quarter of this year to FRF667.76 million (US$96.16mn;EUR101.5mn). All but a small portion of this number comes from its 94 chains in France. Sales in its seven Belgian stores were up 39.9% to just under FRF 38 million, while sales in Poland came to FRF9.64 million (US$1.39mn;EUR1.47mn). Last year the retailer’s sales were up 12.3% to EUR3.254 million. In addition to Hungary, Go Sport plans to enter two new (southern) European markets in 2001 as well. Likewise, this year the chain will to open 10-13 new stores in France and 3-5 in Belgium and Poland, including a second store in Warsaw. (JW)
