THE HAGUE, Netherlands (23 August 2000) – The Dutch traffic minister wants to introduce a separate driving license category for motorcycles with 25 kW and more. The actual motorcycle driving license restricts its user to light motorcycles and scooters as long as he/she is under 21. After two years, a rider automatically acquires the qualification to ride a more powerful machine. The minister thinks a heavy motorcycle requires other skills and proven experience. The new measure is suggested with road safety in view, and the idea is offered to the EC committee which is working on a new pan-European driving license structure.
