Sotheby’s to Auction Off Rare Bike and Motorcycle Collectibles

CHICAGO, IL/USA (28 August 2000) — On 16 September renown auction house Sotheby’s will hold a bicycle and motorcycle auction in Chicago. On offer will be 50 bikes ranging from 19th century models to balloon tires and some 100 motorcycles from famous international makes. Highlights include will be Frank W. Schwinn’s handwritten manuscript, partially dated, some pages initialed and dated, FWS ’43, which is expected to fetch $10,000-15,000, says the auctioneer. Also for sale will be Edward Schwinn’s childhood bike from 1957 (auction estimate: $8,000-10,000) and approximately 150 volumes of bound motorcycle and bicycle periodicals, thought to be the most comprehensive in existence (auction estimate: $80,000-120,000).
