TURIN, Italy (18 November) – Eduardo Agnelli’s suicide was the latest drama to hit Italy’s ‘Royal’ family. Last Wednesday, the son of Gianni Agnelli and heir to the Fiat dynasty, whose assets that include Europe’s largest scooter manufacturer Piaggio and Italian football team Juventus, drowned himself in a viaduct in Turin. Though it was unlikely that Eduardo would have ever assumed the Fiat helm – he never expressed any interest in the company – all of Italy mourns his loss. This is because in Italy the Agnelli family is considered the country’s Kennedy family. In terms of wealth, interest in politics and business but also in terms of tragedy, it is a fitting comparison. The family has a history of untimely deaths for heirs in waiting, from the father of current Fiat head Gianni Agnelli, also named Eduardo, who died when he became entangled in a propeller in a plane produced by his own company to Giovanni’s brother Giorgio, who died of cancer at age 33. Eduardo, a self-proclaimed Marxist and ‘bachelor for life’, was just 46 years old. It is unclear who will take over the dynasty, as Gianni Agnelli doesn’t consider any of his daughters fit to run the empire. (JW)
