CAVENAGO BRIANZA, Italy (February 27) – What started as just a sales office, is about to turn into an assembly plant for bicycle components. FSA Europe which is wholly owned by Taiwan’s Tien Hsin Industries will begin production of bb-units and cranksets in northern Italy at the end of this year or the beginning of 2003. In a time when almost every Taiwanese producer is moving production to China, FSA/TH will invest in Europe. The reasons for this remarkable step: ‘Tailor-made’ service for OEM customers.
Similar service aspects have already led to an expansion of the European office of FSA/TH Industries that was opened scarcely a year ago. Claudio Marra, Managing Director of FSA Europe decided quickly to expand the office with a warehouse where ’emergency’ stock are kept with which FSA can provide fast delivery service to bike manufacturers. These OEM deliveries are currently making a larger and larger portion of FSA and TH Industries’ business in Europe despite the fact that FSA -which stands for Full Speed Ahead – is an Aftermarket brand.
About the background of these remarkable decisions Claudio Marra says, “Let me begin with the clarification that what we plan is the assembly of components. For example BB-units, we will receive the axle and aluminum parts from Taiwan while the bearings will come from a European supplier. Then we will assemble the parts into a complete BB-unit. In addition to more flexibility, this will give us a savings in transport costs and therefore lower prices for our products.”
“We will start the European production with BB-units. Cranksets however, will follow quickly”, Marra continues, “With this, we are able to offer our customers very flexible service. They can even determine the size of the chainrings which are to be fitted into the complete crankset. And this is the actual reason for starting our production in Europe, it offers us the opportunity to give ‘Tailor Made service’ to our OEM customers.” (JO)
