WIGAN, UK (April 29)- JJB Sports plc, the UK based sports retail chain, is to open a second superstore in downtown Amsterdam, The Netherlands, this summer. JJB opened its first store abroad in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, by November 2001. “As expected, it is taking some time to build the JJB brand and develop a customer base in The Netherlands”, said chairman/founder David Whelan in his annual statement. “I believe, that the sports retail market in The Netherlands is underdeveloped. We now acquired a prime site in the center of Amsterdam, which will be opened during the summer”, explained Whelan. A health club will be constructed on the upper floors.
During 2001, JJB did not manage to increase its turnover from its cycles sales, due to a current weak domestic market for bikes. JJB sells brands, such as Raleigh, Felt BMX bikes and Nirve mountain bikes among others. JJB Sports operates 435 stores among which are 178 superstores. Over its fiscal year, which ended 31 January, 2002, JJB Sports plc saw its pre-tax profit jump by a 31% to £ 110.2 million (€ 181.83 million) on a 11% higher turnover at £ 739.4 million (€ 1.22 billion). Earnings per share (EPS) rose 32% to £ 0.31 (€ 0.51) (FN)
