POZZOLEONE, Italy (2 July) – Selle Royal, the most prominent European saddle maker, has taken over the prestigious UK saddle brand Brooks. Selle Royal founder Riccardo Bigolin explains the takeover as an outing of respect for Brooks: “Brooks is a return to the real essence of things, to the reasons why people invent a product. In 1866, John Boultbee Brooks decided to make a leather saddle for his new velocipede because he found the wooden saddle very uncomfortable. I also began making leather saddles for not too dissimilar a reason”. Brooks (2001 characteristics: 75.000 saddles, turnover € 1.558 million, employees 22) will profit by the marketing strategy of Selle Royal, and Selle Royal (2001 characteristics: 16 million saddles, turnover € 47.6 million, 390 employees) will have the niche brand for fine leather saddles. The reason the previous owners of Brooks (the 4-man management who bought Brooks from the Lenark mess) were selling is that they found in Selle Royal a willing investor to update the old company. The move is supposed to be a mutual profit.(OB)
