NEVERS, France (May 26) – Look Bicycles have transferred their production of carbon components (frames, forks) to Tunisia. Last year, the Look board decided on this move, and at this moment the Tunisian factory is in its regular production phase. The move was said to add production capacity (the Look turnover has doubled in 3 years to € 23.4 million with the USA as their main export market). But apart from the low labor cost, another reason for the transfer is the increasing pressure from the EU labor conditions legislation. Production of carbon products inevitably involves volatile chemicals, dust particles, etc. Of course, Look have taken all necessary measures to protect their employees appropriately, but have taken the step towards Africa mainly to ensure production possibilities on the long term. The choice for Tunisia -former French colony- is obvious: they speak the same language, it is nearby and it is no prospect EU member for which the same legal blueprint will apply sooner or later.(OB)
