AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands (October 1) – The special bike theft unit of the Amsterdam police do catch bike thieves red-handed each day. However, the added effort to bring back the stolen bikes to their owners often seems ludicrous. A lady whose bike had been stolen 24 years ago from the basement of her apartment (in another Dutch city) got the jalopy back. She had joined the contemporary fashion to have her zip code engraved in the frame, which made her traceable today. Not without effort, that is, because she has moved to Germany ten years ago. She had completely forgotten about the bike, which was delivered at her doorstep by the proud constables.(OB)
