MAARSSEN, Netherlands (April 6th) – The upsurge in demand for steel in China has some repercussions on coal too. The total import over 2003 was 2.6Mt – the figure for 2002 was just 256.000t. For 2004 figures of 5Mt to even 10Mt are quoted. China has signed some long term contracts with Australian exporters to secure the supply. Export from China will be minimised, which will have it’s effects on Japanese steel companies.
