MALLABIA, Spain (April 7) – With yearly sales of about 80,000 units and a 30% market share Orbea is by far the biggest in Spain. Next to that all other possibilities to grow in the region already have been exploited; for instance with a new Portuguese facility near Porto that is targeting sales at supermarkets. So, growth has to come from upping exports. And that is already taking place. Orbea exported in 2003 74,000 bikes of its total production of 210,000 bicycles. Spain’s market leader doesn’t want to leave it at. Further growth must come especially from the Northern European countries for which Orbea developed a range of Trekking models which are suited to the specific demands of the markets in Germany, Holland, Belgium and the UK.
