NAIROBI, Kenya (May 11) – This is the most heard answer when people in regions like Africa and Asia are asked why they do not ride a bicycle. Although they can see for themselves that their cities are rapidly coming to a complete standstill, not to mention the quality of air they are confronted with each day, they will not stoop to using a clean, cheap bike. As the situation is getting more and more to the level of instant suffocation on certain days, several African governments have decided to try and turn the tide. Special government run schemes will try and promote the use of bikes for personal transport: some of the higher officials have vowed not to use their own cars too. Maybe an example to follow for the rest of the world? (MH)
