HEERENVEEN, The Netherlands (November 2) – Accell Group has announced that it will stop selling Kronan bicycles in The Netherlands. The company acquired the rights to the name in March 2003 from Kronan Cykel Svenska AB. That company went end of last year bankrupt and the license for the trademark Kronan werd sold to Kronan Barnvagn AB. From January 1, 2005 this company will distribute all Kronan bikes in Western Europe and with that the Dutch Accell Group who licensed the rights for the use of the brand name will stop all activities in Holland while the same goes for Development Engineering in Germany.
According to René Takens, chairman of the board at Accell, the new company asked a considerably higher amount for the licence, and he was not interested. “When Kronan hit the market, it was a hype, but that has now died. It was a fun marketing idea, but it has outlived its sell by date. That is why we have decided to stop selling Kronan, and to offer our stocks in the market. Some of the Kronan models are our own design, and we will continue using those – those models might well return to the market under a different brandname,” said Takens.
Kronan Barnvagn AB has the intention of returning to the Dutch market though, with bicycles, prams, suitcases and watches.(MH)
