ZURICH, Zwitserland (November 9) – Migros, Switzerland’s largest food retailer, is offering environmentally friendly grocery delivery – by electric bicycle – as part of a six-month experiment. The project, dubbed NewRide, aims to eliminate auto traffic by promoting electric bicycles.
Migros and the city of Zurich, which is sponsoring the project, chose the Hoengg district to serve as its test ground. Residents can order up to 20 kilograms once a week for home delivery. The delivery cost is an additional 2 Swiss francs (US$ 1.70; € 1.31).
The bikes, which work entirely on electric energy, are made by Flyer and subsidized by the municipal electricity company EWZ. A rechargeable battery and solar panel power the bike’s motor, allowing them to go as fast as 35 kilometers per hour (22 mph) – enough to climb the city’s hills. Migros’ hold on Switzerland’s food retail market has been increasingly challenged in recent years, most notably by German discount supermarkets Lidl and Aldi. (MH)
