NUNSPEET, Netherlands (November 30) – For the first time in bike-history, Shimano will be the main sponsor of a professional road racing team. This new Continental Pro Team will be named Team Shimano-Van Keulen-Imabo Van Buren (wonder how the shirt will look!) and Arend Scheppink will be the manager. The team will have a mix of young, talented Japanese and Dutch riders and they will be present in professional road races all over the world. The new team will be riding Colnago frames, of course with Shimano components.
The formation of this team brings two worlds together: Arend Scheppink was searching for a new sponsor so he could offer young (mainly Dutch)
neo-professionals an opportunity to prove themselves in the professional
cycling world. On the other hand, one of Shimano’s main goals for the next few years is to support Japanese road cycling environment. Sponsorship of this new Continental Pro Team offers excellent opportunities to a number of Japanese riders to experience professional road cycling by themselves and take Japanese cycling to a higher level.
With this team, Shimano will be informed even better about the requirements of professional road racing. It also creates a perfect platform for testing new developments. (MH)
