CHANDIGARH, India (December 21) – Riding a bicycle is good for you and your city. Everyone who rides a bicycle does the city a huge favour. Every bicycle means there’s one less motor vehicle, one slot less taken in the parking lot, less noise and a few less pollution afflicted lungs. Ride bicycles because cycling is healthy, enjoyable and economical.

This was the message given to people when the first cycle club of Chandigarh was inaugurated at the KB DAV Centenary Public School by Sunder Lal Bahuguna on December 15.

“Earth can provide for everyone’s needs but not anyone’s greed. Adopt simplicity and the spirit of service and sacrifice in order to lead a happy and peaceful life,” Bahuguna said to the schoolchildren. He warned that the greed of man is threatening mother earth and its inhabitants.

Wise words from a country that is rapidly loosing it’s relation with the bicycle, and is becoming more motorized by the week. And school is the place to learn, so these ideas will (hopefully) fall onto fertile ground. Maybe a good idea for other schools too? (MH)
