TOKYO, Japan ( December 16) – The Sony Corporation announced that it would start shipping Lithium-ion secondary batteries with the industry’s highest energy density in December 2004, and high-power output Li-ion secondary batteries using a new material in the positive electrode from January 2005.
Sony revealed five new Li-ion secondary battery series: among which is the S pack, a polymer battery pack for mobile phones which increases space efficiency by reducing the number of components; the V series, a high-power battery which uses a new material in the positive electrode, for use in power tools such as cutting machines; and the VT series, another high-power battery which uses the same new positive electrode material and which can be used in a multitude of machines, including electric bikes.
Power output has been raised with 9% compared to existing products, and the batteries are easier to retro-fit to existing vehicles and applications. Next to a higher capacity, the batteries have a more favourable charge and discharge pattern, which makes for a more stable power delivery.(MH)
