NEW DELHI, India (April 21) – On the lookout for new export markets, Ludhiana-based bicycle maker Hi Bird Cycles has set up branch offices in China and Netherlands and plans to go to other countries as well.

The company already exports bicycles, bicycle parts and sports goods to over 80 countries, most of them in Africa and Europe. The new initiative would help increase its exports in European countries as well as look for new markets, the company’s CMD, R D Sharma said.

The company supplies over 100 models of bicycles to the domestic and international market under the brand name of Hi-Bird and its major domestic clients are the State governments.

The Madhya Pradesh Government recently placed an order for supply of 37,000 cycles that would be distributed free to school going girls in the State. Similarly Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu governments had placed orders for more than 50,000 cycles.

The company had bagged similar orders from Nigeria and Rwanda for schoolteachers and it was now in the final stage of signing a technological tie-up with a major bicycle manufacturing company in the Europe to manufacture high-end bicycles.
