LELYSTAD, The Netherlands (May 19) – After Dirk Kurek (sales manager) and Frank Schreiner (marketing/product manager) of Giant Germany, now also the commercial director of Giant Holland, Eddy Meerens has left the Taiwan bike maker. A difference of opinion about how to operate on the Dutch market prompted Meerens to leave.
In September 2004 Meerens together with Willem Buitenhuis took over from Ed Hasselman, at that time commercial director for Giant Holland. The differences of opinion between Meerens and Giant are focused on the question whether Giant has to keep positioning itself as a sporty bike-brand or has to target more and more the market for City Bike and even the typical Dutch Bike with fully enclosed chain, mudguards and lighting set. What also contributed to these ‘differences of opinion’ is the fact that Giant Taiwan managed to increase it results significantly while Giant Europe showed disappointing sales. It’s even said that sales dropped by about 40% last year.
Giant Europe MD Jan Derksen said about the resignation of Meerens: “Giant is a company that is changing constantly for which we hold certain ideas. Of course it’s important that the management holds the same ideas. Eddy worked for 14 years at Giant and I am sorry to see him leave.” Willem Buitenhuis will take over the tasks of Meerens together with financial manager Piet van Wegen.
