Kazakhstan President Pledges Investment in Bicycle Sport

ASTANA, Kazakhstan (Sep 29) – The International bicycle race-criterium was held today in Astana. Professional riders from Kazakhstan, Russia, Italy, Norway, Australia, Germany, Belgium and Lithuania participated: among them Kazakhstani bicycle racer Alexander Vinokurov.

The president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev took the opportunity to pledge support for cycling in his country. Among other investments, a new cycle track, conforming with world standards, will be built in Astana soon. All over the country, schools will get the possibility to involve children in bicycling, ‘to create a whole wave of new Kazakhstani bicycle racers’ as the president put it.

The International criterium, won by Alexander Vinokurov, will become a yearly event in Kazakhstan according to the chairman of the Kazakhstan Cycling Federation, Daniyal Akhmetov.
