Bush Brothers differ on Bike Issues

ORLANDO, US – While George loves riding his bike, and has OK-ed measures to stimulate cycling, brother Jeb has vetoed a bill funding sidewalks and bicycle lanes.
The plan was to place a surcharge on rental cars, which would have generated more money for sidewalks and other local pedestrian and bicycle projects. Citing concerns that the $2-a-day surcharge would unfairly target out-of-town visitors, Gov. Jeb Bush vetoed the measure Tuesday to the cheers of the car rental industry. "These taxes will be paid disparately by tourists visiting Florida, consequently creating taxation without representation on a large scale," Bush said in a news release. "Philosophically, I cannot support this." To impose the rental-car surcharge, each county would have had to adopt it by referendum. It was sponsored by Central Florida lawmakers, who estimate it could have raised $40 million for transportation projects in the Orlando area alone.
