NORDHAUSEN/ERFURT, Germany – Former Biria subsidiary Bike Systems GmbH from Nordhausen asked for insolvency on August 10. Marco Comes of Erfurt-based Wutzke & Förster has been appointed as receiver who, at the moment, does not want to disclose anything on this insolvency.

However, according to several sources there are interested parties to continue Bike Systems. One of them is said to be Gerhard A. Urbannek, close friend of former Biria founder Mehdi Biria as well as consultant and chairman of Biria Group.

After US investor Lone Star pulled the plug on the Biria bike factory in Neukirch and sold the assets to competitor Mifa Mitteldeutsche Fahrradwerke AG (and since than holds a 25 percent stake in Mifa), Bike Systems was only used as a sub-constructor for Mifa. A strike started by the 130 staff on June 10 didn’t change anything, as is mentioned by local newspaper Mitteldeutsche Zeitung. Production stopped already on June 30. Negotiations between the workers’ council and Bike Systems management were stopped on August 1.

According to the Thuringia Allgemeine Zeitung dated July 11: “Lone Star offered an amount that did not even meet the wages during the lay-off protection period (one to seven months)”. And: “The Bike Systems staff is not willing to accept an offer as low as the one being given to the former staff of the closed Neukirch facility.”

Nevertheless according to the radio station Landeswelle Thüringen there seem to be several interested parties for the Nordhausen facility. One of them is Gerhard A. Urbannek, former consultant and chairman of the Biria Group, according to the radio station. Another candidate for the continuation of Bike Systems is said to start high quality bike assembling at the Nordhausen facility. A final solution should be found within weeks.
