Halfords To Cut Staff At UK Head Office

REDDITCH, UK – The positive financial results of the first half of this year reported by Halfords last week could not prevent that the UK retailer is currently in the process of major restructuring. One of the rumours which neither confirmed nor denied is a 25% staff cut at Halfords head office in Redditch were 650 people are employed.

It is not yet clear if the restructuring process will affect the distribution centers, although some warehouse workers are already reporting a drop in working hours. The bicycle department will be least affected through these measures as it is currently the most profitable.

“The current economic downturn is heavily impacting upon the British retail market. We must review those activities within the business that can be carried out more effectively,” said a Halfords spokesman.

Traditionally, Halfords does extremely well during Christmas sales and sees a huge rise in children’s bicycle turn over. Despite VAT reduction in the UK it is not yet clear if seasonal sales this year will remain unaffected by the credit crisis.
