Mavic has developed its ISM 3D technology for improved performance and easier acceleration. Since the rim wall between each spoke hole is subjected to very little stress, it is possible to mill it to save weight.
The rim is CNC machined, leaving just the necessary material to obtain the best ratio between weight, rigidity and durability. Mavic has implemented this technology in its MTB and road race product lines.
To improve aerodynamics, Mavic has launched R2R, or ‘rim 2 rim’ spoke technology. The continuous carbon fiber spoke joins one side of the rim to the opposite one, crossing the centre of the wheel through the hub flanges. Where a normal wheel uses two spokes, with four spoke ends, R2R allows the use of only one spoke with just two spoke ends.
The spoke construction and assembly to the hub is Mavic patented. R2R provides better aerodynamics with the smooth integration of the spoke to the hub flanges and into the rim structure. The concept also saves weight as the R2R spokes halve the number of spoke ends and creates very low stress at the hub.
The R2R spokes are made of unidirectional carbon fiber, which has a better resistance to traction than steel or aluminum. The overall wheelset is also stronger as the weak points of a spoke are normally its heads. With only two heads instead of four, the chance of spoke breakage is also reduced by half.
