FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, Germany – Giant Light Metal Technology Co. Ltd. based in Kunshan, China – a wholly owned subsidiary of Giant Global Group from Taiwan – is developing new wheel components in partnership with Alpina Raggi SpA from Lomagna, Italy. This partnership involves the production and distribution of superlight, dimpled rims and spokes and nipples for electric bicycles.
Giant Light Metal Technology Co. Ltd., better known as GLM Giant, is a state-of-the-art extrusion factory making alloy products from raw materials as bauxite and copper. Next to ‘mother’ Giant this manufacturer also supplies many other bike makers in the world with its products and may even count some of the biggest motorcycle producers in the world among its customers as GLM Giant also produces rims for scooters and motorcycles.
One of GLM Giant’s latest developments is an alloy especially suited for MTB rims named G96. It has superior material properties compared to alloy 6061. GLM Giant is also using the new superlight but extra strong alloy for rims targeted for electric bikes. In order to withstand the extra power of electric bikes compared to that of regular bikes and better match the typically oversized e-Bike hubs, the rims are dimpled. This means that the spoke holes are drilled at an angle, so that the spokes can line-up perfectly with the hub-motor.
The GLM Giant G96 rims can be fitted with Alpina Raggi double butted spokes and autoblock nipples which are specially developed for these e-Bike rims. Next to durability this rim/spokes and nipples combination excels in saving weight. The GLM Giant rim with the Alpina Raggi spokes and nipples saves about 250 grams in weight per wheel; for a considerable weight savings per e-Bike of about 500 grams. This will contribute to better performance for e-Bikes equipped with the product.
First prototypes of the GLM Giant/Alpina Raggi wheel components cfor e-Bikes will be shown at next December’s Taichung Bike Week. Distribution of the Alpina Superlight wheel components for e-Bikes will be handled by Alpina Raggi.
