MAGSTADT, Germany – Merida recently opened a facility in Germany which is to focus solely on the final assembly of Merida e-Bikes. The new building is located near Merida Germany’s HQ in Magstadt. Next to the assembly of the e-bikes this location with a capacity of 80,000 units, will also be used for storage of Merida bicycles.
At Eurobike Merida was presented as one of the thirteen OEM’s who spec’ed the new Bosch e-Bike drivesystem. Following Bosch’ production start of this e-Bike system Merida is now setting up the assembly of its new e-bike range.
The in Germany assembled e-bikes will become available end of April, early May in Germany, Austria and the Benelux countries. All bikes will be pre-assembled in Taiwan and shipped to Germany where the e-bike system as well as all other European made components will be fitted.
“Our choice for the final assembly of the e-Bikes in Germany has all to do with costs,” said Peter Koperdraad, GM of Merida Benelux. “The higher assembly costs in Europe related to Taiwan do not equal out the transportation costs of the Bosch electronic systems to Taiwan. Assembly in Europe safes a lot of transportation costs.”
Currently Merida is developing a dealer training program in order to provide maximum support for IBDs at the introduction of the new Merida e-bikes.
