HONG KONG – With the Dutch-designed BA500 battery condition tester dealers can independently test all e-bike batteries, designed for 250/350W motors. The distribution and technical support to e-bike dealers in the Benelux has been granted to Dutch FYN Automatisering BV in Oss.

“Prior to starting the development of the BA500 we first performed an extensive market research, in which major e-bike manufacturers in Europe, USA en China were visited,” says James Post, director Battery Condition Test International.

“This yielded that next to criticism on lithium-ion battery quality, the handling of warranty cases was considered problematic, partly because the unavailability of suitable, affordable test equipment but mostly because of the relatively high shipping & handling cost.”

With the BA500 all the dealer needs to do is connect the battery and charger; select a profile from a list or by scanning bar codes (for supported brands) and push START. At the end of the test, a professional test report is automatically printed.

The simple operation was realized by incorporating all technical aspects for the battery condition tests in battery/charger profiles, prepared by Battery Condition Test, on the basis of e-bike manufacturer’s provided data.

Two tests

1. A usability test, which accurately simulates street conditions. With this test, the motor specifications are considered; especially the peak performance (400-500W) is of essential importance. Most battery testers do not support this and are thus not suitable for a usability test. For dealers, this test is important for replacement advice to consumers as well as well-founded judging of the value of batteries for trade-ins.

2. A warranty test, to be executed in compliance with manufacturer’s warranty conditions. Since most manufacturers/importers know (or use) the BA500, the step to subcontract warranty handling to qualified dealers is not a difficult one to take and Battery Condition Test provides training to dealers to make them full-fledged discussion partners. While dealers will likely be compensated, this solution is definitely cheaper for the manufacturers/importers. Moreover, they can add the professional BA500 test report to their warranty claim to the battery manufacturer (who are usually aware of or own the BA500), which means substantially reduced handling cost and stress on service teams.

The same efficient procedure can be used for Quality Assurances systems at battery manufacturers.
