Aerodynamics Key Issue for Merida Road Bikes

MALLORCA, Spain – Last weekend, at the annual Merida Press Camp, the presentation of the ProTour Lampre team with World Champion Rui Costa and the Multivan Merida MTB team with World Champion Gunn – Rita Dahle attracted a crowd of over 350 to the island of Mallorca.

The disclosure of the new Lampre-Merida team and team bike got lots of media attention. Aerodynamics is the key issue for Merida at the development of the Reacto road bikes. According to an engineer of Merida Germany, better aerodynamics gains more speed than saving weight at over 25 km/h.

Position on the bike

Based on extensive wind tunnel tests Merida’s R&D team has decided to change the seating position of the riders. A little higher head and a longer top tube results in a higher seating position and a straight back. Also the new position of the rider’s head provides a smoother air flow resulting in higher speeds.

Another remarkable Reacto team bike feature is that Rotor’s oval chain rings are fitted. It’s optional for the Lampre riders but we were told that 16 out of the 20 team members have chosen to ride with the Rotor oval chain rings. Crank sets come with ‘Rotor Power Racer’ power meters to determine the output of the avid riders.
