HONGKONG – Battery Condition Test International Ltd. (BCT) developed new testers that match the requirements of higher performance speed-pedelecs and high speed e-bikes. On top of that they are upgradable.

As the market trend focusses on stronger motors, the company introduces a tester that goes well beyond the traditional 250W e-bike which stood at the base of the successful BA500 tester.

New BCT models

“To understand the requirements of battery testers we should take a closer look at the load of an e-bike motor and the battery in a typical city ride with regular brakes and accelerations,” says James Post of Battery Condition Test International. “The motor requires start-up peak currents that are much higher than the nominal power usage. In order to judge if the battery is suitable for the job it is important to test at street conditions.”

E-bike peak currents

Post points out that this is very important because weaker batteries tend to develop a higher internal resistance. “Such batteries will be less able to supply the peak currents a motor needs in a start-stop situation and thus are less suitable. For the e-bike dealer it is of vital importance to evaluate batteries properly, as the price they offer for trade-ins and the advices they give to consumers is based on their reports.

The new battery condition tester line includes five models which range between 400W to 1,200W continuously and 600W to 1,800W at peak power. All new models are available at BCT’s European distribution centre in the Netherlands.

Modular approach allows easy upgrading

The BCT battery tester has a modular design in order to facilitate the quickly changing e-bike market and the power level of the batteries. Nearly all BCT models can be adjusted and are mutually replaceable.

The number of connectors on e-bike batteries is sheer unlimited. Most manufacturers try to be as unique as possible to strengthen their market position. Dealers would have to invest substantially in all kind of cables and connectors. BCT developed a custom connector tab and converter which is available for 15 euro per set.
