DÜSSELDORF, Germany (21 February 2000)–Since 1 January 2000 Hannes Klocker is responsible for Giant in Austria. Klocker, who was responsible for building up the Trek brand in Austria, will cooperate closely with Dirk Kurek, general manager of Giant Germany.

With this step Giant will no longer be an exclusive brand at the sporting goods buyers group Intersport Austria. Until now Sportmarketing, a branch of Intersport Austria, had the exclusive distribution rights for Giant in Austria. As such, Giant bicycles were distributed through Intersport pro retail member stores, but also through Intersport Austria’s huge own sporting good market chains Sports Experts and Intersport XL outlets.

According to industry observers, Intersport Austria has a 50-55% share of the home bicycle market. In addition to Intersport International’s own Nakamura brand, it sell its own labels Taifun and Genesis.

“Our philosophy is that Giant’s retail partners must be professional dealers. Giant is an internationally successful bicycle brand, and its success is based on our philosophy,” says Kurek. “It involves a soft change. Sportmarketing will continue to
distribute the actual collection, but Klocker will distribute exclusively the 2000/2001 range.”

This move may cost Giant a few sales in the short term. However, it will also reinforce the brand’s image as an independent and exclusive brand. And, as Kurek underlines, the change does not mean that Intersport members will no longer sell the Giant brand. Nevertheless, many think that this is the beginning of the end for Giant sales through the sporting goods chain stores like Sports Experts and Intersport XL outlets. (JB)
