DUESSELDORFF, Germany – Metro Group is putting its Galeria Kaufhof department stores including the Sportarena outlets up for sale. It is rumoured that the 141 stores in Germany and Belgium which also offer bikes and bike products, are to be bought by Arcandor, previously known as Karstadt-Quelle.

It is said that Arcandor with Kaufhof and Sportarena will form a new consortium in which also Italian (La Rinascente) and French (Printemps and Made in Sport) retail chains are brought together.

According to the trade publication for the sporting goods sector – Sporting Goods Intelligence – also Deutsche Bank, Pirelli Re and Maurizio Borletti are to join the new consortium.

Metro Group owns cash & carry, food-retail, non-food specialty and department store formats with brands Metro Cash & Carry, Kaufhof, Media Markt, Extra, Real, Parktiker, Saturn and Metro/Makro wholesale stores. Metro’s 2007 sales increased with 10.4% to € 64.3 billion. EBIT increased by 8.8% to € 2.1 billion. The company runs 113 Galeria Kaufhof stores in Germany and 15 in Belgium as well as 13 German Sportarena outlets.
