Portuguese SportZone Expanding

LISBON, Portugal – The major Portuguese sports retail chain SportZone that is also selling bikes and bike products, is expanding big time. Not only opened the company 13 additional stores in 2007 and three more since the start of this year; it is also entering the Spanish market with the opening of four stores that is to take place in the next weeks.

The Spanish SportZone stores will resemble the 57 ones the company operates in Portugal and they will carry about the same range of products; including bikes.

SportZone intends to become a sports retail chain that covers the whole of the Iberian peninnsula with a total of about 100 stores in 2010. However, the company’s expansion plans do not stop there as SportZone is also planning to enter other markets like Italy where the first stores should open in 2009.

SportZone is owned by Sonae Distribuição, a subsidiary of the Sonae Group which is a Portuguese holding that runs supermarkets and shopping centers in various countries. SportZone recently announced that its 2007 results were up 14% to a total turnover of 143 million euro.
