UCI under Fire
LONDON, UK – ‘Change Cycling Now (CCN)’, the group of former pro cycle team members, doping experts and campaigning journalists which is to force change upon the UCI, held a press conference yesterday. Here the group presented the “Charter of the Willing; a road map for the future direction of competitive cycling.” CCN also called upon UCI Chairman Pat McQuaid to step down immediately.
The Change Cycling Now group on which Bike Europe reported November 29 (click here for that article), pleads for a “Truth and Reconciliation Commission” with which the sport of cycling must break the omerta on doping practices. Also CCN calls for an independent commission to investigate the UCI and senior management with the help of WADA (World anti-doping agency) and USADA (US anti-doping agency). Next to this CCN wants independent anti-doping controls without any UCI involvement.
In the meantime also the UCI announced that an independent commission is to investigate the role of the International Cyclists Union in the wake of the Lance Armstrong doping scandal. The commission will be chaired by former UK judge Philip Otton while two other members were selected by the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS). This independent commission will organize hearings in April 2013 while its report on the UCI role in the Armstrong doping case will be presented June 1, 2013.
