Lobby and Work in Progress for Specific Helmets for Speed E-Bikes
FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, Germany – Yesterday, at the opening press conference for Eurobike 2015, comments were made on specific and suitable helmets for speed e-bikes. Currently regulations that come into force January 1, 2017 stipulate that these helmets must be full face motorcycle helmets. With that, “The industry will lose all the promises this new category has for the future.”
That the obligation to wear a full face motorcycle helmet on a speed e-bike, which essentially is still a bicycle, will kill all business for speed e-bikes was stated by René Takens, President of the Confederation for the European Bicycle Industry (CONEBI) as well as CEO of Accell Group NV.
EN approved speed e-bike helmets
He also said that before the new regulations come into force on January 1, 2017 specific and lawfully approved helmets to be used when riding speed e-bikes will be available. On questions by Bike Europe René Takens said, “Work is in progress inside the industry to get to EN approved speed e-bike helmets. Discussions are taking place in Brussels as well. So far everybody is cooperative for establishing norms that will lead to EN approved speed e-bike helmets before the new type approval regulations for speed e-bike come into force on January 1, 2017.”
