MAARSSEN, Netherlands (November 25th) - A strange phenomena: more children's bikes are sold in the US than ever but the young owners do not use them. One of the main reasons for the sales increase is price: more than 80% of the sub 20" wheel size bikes are sold by Wal-Mart, sometimes for as little as $30. Problem is that many parents consider riding a bike too far from home as dangerous - so the kids are restricted to circling the block - and that looses its attraction very soon. So of the many bikes sold a large part finds a quiet corner in the garage to enjoy its early retirement. (MH)
