AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (July 20) – After 44 years, the Dutch Fiets! Foundation will be put to sleep. Not disbanded, mind you, but stored until needed. The foundation was originally ‘invented’ to promote the use of the bicycle and to form a link between several other organisations. After some disputes about the way the funds were spent (funds that were voluntarily contributed by the Dutch bicycle industry) the decision was made to ‘freeze’ the foundations activities. It’s task of lobbying in government had already been taken over largely by the RAI and BOVAG (respectively the producers/importers organisation and the trade/dealer organisation). The foundation’s activity best known to the general public, the election of the ‘Bike of the Year’ in the Netherlands will be continued.(MH)
