LUDHIANA, India (Feb 23) - Tariff concessions could hit the growth of the Indian bicycle industry, so the sector has asked the government to list bicycles as a "sensitive product" under WTO's Non-Agricultural Market Access Negotiations (NAMA).
"The government should put the industry on the list of sensitive products as any tariff concessions on bicycles under NAMA could severely affect the industry," the President of the Indian Bicycle Manufacturer Association, Satish Dhanda said.
"China, which is being seen as threat to India, will be able to capture the Indian market by selling bicycles below the cost, once the tariffs are reduced on the category. Hence, the domestic industry should be protected."
