UTRECHT, Netherlands – The European Union has imposed an anti-dumping duty on leather shows made in China and Vietnam. The duty will be installed as per April 7th, with a sliding scale. Eventually, the duty will be 4% for Chinese, and 16.8% for Vietnamese shoes. A further investigation will have to
ascertain whether the measure will be in place for a maximum of 5 years.
Of the 2.5 billion pairs of shoes that were imported into the EU, 50% originated in China. China has revoked the accusation that the shows are dumped below cost price.
According to the EU, the import of shoes from China has ten-folded between 2001 and 2005. The import from Vietnam rose by 95% over the same period. Shoes from both countries, have become 28% cheaper over the last four years. (MH)
