Municipal Bicycles for Rent in Prague

Prague, Czech Republic - The pilot project of municipal bicycle rentals, launched in Prague’s 8-Karlin district, has scored success and will soon spread in other parts of the capital, the daily Lidove Noviny writes today. Prague has thereby joined other European cities, such as Berlin for instance, where municipal bicycles have been offered for rent for a long time. So far 15 automatic locked stands with yellow bicycles have been placed in Karlin. At present about 100 people use the public bicycles regularly, while dozens of others rent them occasionally, the paper notes. "We have been pleasantly surprised as the project has met with a broad interest despite bad weather all over the winter," Petr Zatko from the Homeport company operating the bicycle rentals told the paper. The company has already agreed on installing some 100 new stands with a total of 150 bicycles in Prague 4 and a contract with Prague 5 is being prepared. Other bicycle stands are planned in Prague 7. Moreover, Prague zoo director Petr Fejk has expressed interest in this service as it could enable visitors to get from the zoo more easily.
