MAARSSEN, Netherlands – It is said that currently major changes are taking place in France. After the Accell Group announced that their subsidiary Cycles Mercier will stop its supermarket business; it is rumoured that almost all other bike makers are following suit. However, who’s continuing deliveries to Hypermarkets for ultra-low prices is a traditional French bike maker.
It is confirmed from several sources that more and more French bike makers are trying to expand their dealer business and currently are refusing orders from Hypermarkets. Reason for this major change is in the ‘Price Madness in France’, as Bike Europe reported on the cover page of its September 2006 edition. Here it was also announced that Mercier was stopping its supermarket business because: “There’s no longer any money to be made there,” said an Accell Group spokesman. It seems that more French bike maker now came to the same conclusion.
