BRUSSELS, Belgium - The European Cyclists’ federation has opened a new office, just opposite and in direct view of European Parliament on Place Schumann. Last week's opening ceremony consisted of the signing of a contract for the VeloCity 2009 conference that will be held in Brussels. Minister for the Brussels region Pascal Smet and EFC chairman Manfred Neun performed the opening act. Brussels is pushing to coerce car drivers to take public transport or the bicycle, as the region is one of the most car-congested in Europe. Smet hopes to have 10% of all sub-5 km deplacements by bicycle in 2009. ECF supports the same everyday cycling policy.(OB)
