Cycling advocates meet European Commission

BRUSSELS, Belgium - “Cycling as a clean and healthy means of transport is underestimated in the debate on climate change and the transport policy of many European cities”, stated ECF President Manfred Neun last week.

On European Road Safety Day 2007, ECF President Manfred Neun (r.) and ECF Secretary General Bernhard Ensink (l.) met the Vice-President of the European Commission, in charge of transport, Mr. Jacques Barrot.
The ECF (European Cyclist Federation) representatives presented to the commissioner a report on optimizing cars cyclists' safety and ideas to strengthen the position of cycling in Europe.

The ECF representatives asked the commissioner to pay attention to the document on cycling of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). The EESC adopted this document last week and it will be presented at the Velo-city 2007 Conference in June in Munich. The EESC recommends in this document that cycling be integrated into transport and infrastructure.

Cycling EU-staff member
Manfred Neun thanked Jacques Barrot for his clear position in favour of improving and increasing cycling in Europe. “We are in favour of the proposal to appoint a European Commission staff member specifically in charge of cycling, and to work on a good costs / benefits analysis of investments in transport, including cycling."

"We thank the ECF for all the work the federation does and for signing the Road Safety Charter and we encourage them to continue bringing in ideas and proposals in the consultation process of the Green Paper on Urban Transport”, said Jaques Barrot.
